We've added OpenSearch to the Kete app (http://kete.net.nz, Open Source, Ruby on Rails). It's a great pattern and Kete both provides it and consumes it.

One thing that is missing from your article though is that you should also have RSS or Atom results of your search results, too. This allows for really simple tying together of search services. Here's an example:

http://kete.net.nz/en/site/search/topics/for/_k...

You can see here that we return results both from Kete.net.nz (on left) and Twitter (under "More Resources" on the right via OpenSearch). We do this via the External Search Sources plugin (http://github.com/kete/external_search_sources).

Here's another example:

http://horowhenua.kete.net.nz/en/site/search/to...

This pulls in local results (again on left) with two external sources on the right. The first is another Kete site which is an OpenSearch provider and the second is a search aggregation service specific to New Zealand.

Note that some services deliver the OpenSearch pattern without being strictly compliant. Basically if you see an RSS link on a search results page, you can use it in this way.

So, yes, please use OpenSearch, but go full boar and add RSS to your search results!

Great points, Matt, and I agree. When someone sees this for the first time we normally say 'Wait for it... Wait for it...'. I think a splash message might help. I'll see what I can do on the +filter vs. navigation distinction on links, too. Thanks!

Adam showed this to me a little while back and I'm really loving it. My only beef is really on the UI side....it's not immediately apparent when/where updates are going to show up when the stream refreshes, and then when looking at individual items its not clear which icons/links change the tail filtering and which ones take me offsite.

This is a really interesting resource though, nice work.
